LASIK is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person's dependency on contact lenses or glasses. It's important to throughly research the lasik procedure so you will know what to expect after surgery. You should ask your doctor many questions before undergoing LASIK surgery.
LASIK stands for "Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis" and is a procedure that changes the shape of the cornea (the clear covering of the front of the eye) using a laser. A type of knife called a "microkeratome" is used to cut a flap in the cornea. The flap is folded back to reveal the middlesection of the cornea. A computer-controlled laser vaporizes a portion of the stroma (underneath the cornea) and the flap is put back in place.
Lasik does not give everyone perfect vision. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) reports that seven out of 10 patients achieve 20/20 vision.
